Autumn 2023:
The Art of Holding Space
How do we respond when a friend, colleague, or family member is troubled by grief, confusion, disappointment, or an unexpected diagnosis?
Often, what a person needs most is not a solution but a safe, compassionate space to share their thoughts and experiences -- without being offered advice or judgment.
This is what "Holding Space" is all about.
In this informative class, you will learn how to craft an environment of supportive non-judgment, where you can offer your undivided presence and understanding.
More than just active listening, holding space empowers individuals. It allows their voice to be heard, their feelings validated, and their journey supported without interference.
It takes skill and self-awareness to hold space well.
And it's not just about others. This class will also teach you how to hold space for yourself -- with kindness, care, and self-compassion.
Topics we will discuss include:

The seed for the class came from conversations with students asking how they can 'do better' in being fully present during trying times with someone they care for. I’ve spent the summer reading authors' reflections about 'holding space.' I look forward to sharing insights in this new class."
