Course Description
The relationship between adult children and their aging parent(s) is multifaceted and evolves over time. The relationship is often shaped by changes in roles, responsibilities, and dynamics.
Emotional bonds can become strengthened or become strained. Positive relationships can bring a sense of fulfillment and closeness, while unresolved issues or past conflict may resurface.
Healthy communication between adult children and parents is crucial as parents age. This class will offer guidance on how to have open communication, boundaries and finding needed support in navigating this complex life stage.
A bonus of the course will be a class spent with a panel of adult children of aging parents.

Week 3 - Adult Daughters and their Elder Mothers: What the Research Tells Us
Week 4 - Adult Sons and their Elder Mothers: Expectations
Week 5 - In-Laws By-Laws - Step Children - Grandchildren: Learning To Bite Your Tongue and Other Tips
Week 6 - Turning Points: Research On Closeness in the Adult Child/Parent Relationships
Week 7 - Panel Discussion with Adult Children of Aging Parents
Week 8 - The Real Life Challenges of Later Life
Juanita taught a similar class multiple times at Duke's Lifelong Learning Institute; it was entitled Walking on Eggshells - Parents of Adult Children. The class always had a waiting list. This new version reflects the concerns of the aging mother/adult-child relationship and has been extensively researched and revised.
