Course Description
The AARP recently reported that our children and families don’t want our stuff.
Given this, what will you do with the china, silverware, or vases that you may have acquired? The furniture, the quilts, the books? Have you begun to sort, recycle, discard? Or does the prospect of sorting through your possessions leave you anxious and overwhelmed?
When we die, each of us will leave behind stories, and each of us will leave behind stuff. If we leave behind clutter and chaos, it will take a toll on our loved ones. And a messy clean up will shape the final stories they have of us.
Taking care of things now preserves the legacy we hope loved ones will carry of us and, in the process, frees our time and space for today.
This course will follow Laura Gilbert's gentle advice in her book, The Stories We Leave Behind: A Legacy-Based Approach to Dealing With Stuff. We will follow her roadmap for taking stock of the possessions we have acquired over a lifetime. We will ask ourselves, “What stuff truly offers us meaning? Does our stuff match our personal history?”
We will discern what we keep and what we don’t. We will be clear and careful. Working through the book together, we will organize our stuff, clarify and claim our own stories, and make it easier to recycle and donate things that hold little meaning to us.
"What is my life story?"
"Do my possessions reflect my story?"
Quilts made by hand by a beloved grandmother probably reflect your personal story.
But what about the sets of dishes accumulating dust on the shelves? Or the defunct computer printers you don't know what to do with?
This course will have us consider - "What can I do today to avoid leaving a burden of stuff for loved ones to deal with?" and, "What stuff supports my life today?"
Required reading: The Stories We Leave Behind: A Legacy-Based Approach to Dealing With Stuff, by Laura Gilbert.
Please purchase this book to support the author. It is available in paperback wherever books are sold.
